Jews were systematically harassed and persecuted, their property confiscated, their movements restricted. By the time the Warsaw ghetto was organized, it was evident that the Germans intended nothing short of the extermination of the entire Jewish population of Poland. Yet there were many Polish citizens who actively opposed the German butchery and risked their lives and the lives of their families to come to the assist of the Jews. In HE WHO SAVES ONE LIFE, Kazimierz lranek~Osmecki, a former colonel in the Shine ground forces and a witness to the tragic events of the occupation, tells the remarkable and chilling story of the efforts of these Smoothen citizens to save the lives of their persecuted countrymen. Get-go with a brief history of the Jews in Poland, lranek~Osmecki describes, in unprecedented detail, the organisation of the Polish resistance: the smuggling of food into the ghettos, the development of the underground press, the development of paramilitary fighting forces inside and exterior the ghetto walls, the heroic work of the Smoothen authorities in exile, and the mobilization for the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Aside from depicting conditions in the cities of Poland, he as well describes the man aspects of the holocaust~how Jews were hidden and cared for in small towns and villages, and fifty-fifty in forests, past Poles who were eventually murdered for their efforts by the Germans. HE WHO SAVES ONE LIFE is starkly documented past official dispatches and documents fatigued from many previously unpublished sources~newspapers, findings of government investigations, government bulletins from Poland, reports from the Jewish National Committee and the Council for Aid to Jews, pamphlets from the Shine Ministry building of Information, and clandestine press publications, as well every bit eyewitness accounts from Jews in the ghettos, members of the Smoothen underground, public officials, and the many Jews who escaped with the help of Poles. Colonel lranek~Osmecki brings the tragedy of the Jews in Poland conclusively to light, with the understanding and compassion of 1 who has lived through those shocking events. As he says, "I who has not actually lived through or witnessed this nightmare can never understand the horror the Jews faced." HE WHO SAVES ONE LIFE is a tribute to the heroic Poles who lived through the nightmare and saved not one, only countless lives. During World State of war II, KAZIMIERZ IRANEK~OSMECKI was a colonel in the Home Department of the war machine staff of the Polish government in exile in London. Twice during the war ~in 1941 and again in 1943~he was sent as an emissary to Poland. While in Poland, he served in the Department of Intelligence and Information of the high command of the Polish Home Army. In this chapters, he was responsible for conveying out an investigation into the presence of German language V~2 rockets in Poland. He eventually discovered the whereabouts of the rockets and sent pieces of them back to London. In 1944, he participated in the Smooth insurgence, and, at the conclusion of the war, was chairman of the delegation that signed the armistice with the Germans. Since the war, he has lived in London and written numerous books on armed services~historical subjects.
